Gay Pride Seattle 2008

I got to meet Governor Gregoire!

Well if 20 feet away in a car driving by counts! She waved at me and I got video! ;)

I also saw all of the Seattle city council members. Each riding a segway and wear a t-shirt that said 5 make policy, 9 make a parade.

They were followed by several politicians running for office. Most of whom were walking next to the crowd, shaking our hands and wishing us Happy Pride! For some reason that had a profound affect on me. But it made me wonder why some of the others weren't doing the same!

Some of the costumes were wonderful artwork. There was a lot of energy and no protestors (I was in the last few blocks of the parade route).

It was a hot day for Seattle both in temperature and in excitment.

I'm working on a video and hope to have it finished later today.

Happy Pride to all!

Seattle area HIV-infected man accused of having unrotected sex

by Ian Demsky
The News Tribune

Lakewood police arrested a 29-year-old on man Thursday on a bench warrant charging him with engaging in unprotected sex after lying about his HIV status.

Ruben Gutierrez of Lakewood faces one count of first-degree assault with sexual motivation, a high-level felony that qualifies as a strike under Washington’s three-strikes-and-you’re-out law.

According to charging documents, two men made a report at the Lakewood Police Department last June after one tested positive for HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Same-Sex Couple Sues After Faced With Ultimatum at Mariners Baseball Game

Anyone who has attended a Major League Baseball game in the past decade has probably seen a "Kiss Cam" where couples throughout the ballpark are featured locking lips on the big-screen JumboTrons.

Sirbrina Guerrero, 23, says she and her partner, who requested anonymity, were just "exchanging pecks," not acting any differently than heterosexual couples at the game, when park officials told them to stop "making out" or leave the facility.

"They have a policy that says you can't be conducting in that behavior, but honestly, the Mariners stadium has a kissing camera," Guerrero said. "So I don't understand how they would say you're not allowed to show public affection when they're blasting it across the stadium."

Washington passed a law in 2006 that specifically bans discrimination of same-sex couples in any public setting.

Since the Monday night incident, Guerrero and her partner have filed a formal discrimination complaint against Safeco Field.

The discrimination claim by Guerrero is not the first time Safeco Field has been at the center of same-sex controversy. In 2004, the stadium was the site of a "MAYDAY for Marriage" rally, in which more than 20,000 people turned out to protest same-sex unions.

Join Governor Gregoire at the Seattle Gay Pride Parade

Sunday, June 29th at 11AM Seattle will celebrate Gay Pride.

While at the Pride Parade keep an eye out for the Grand Marshall’s vehicle and you’ll see Governor Chris Gregoire.

Evidently the parade was a bit long last year and will be limited to 2 ½ hours this year.

Hopefully a recording of the Pride Parade will be televised for those of you unable to attend (last year 2 hours of the parade was televised). Maybe one year it will be live!

Visit the Out & Proud website for more information regarding the parade.

Protest planned to counter Day of Silence at Mount Si High School

By Lynn Thompson
Seattle Times Eastside bureau
Washington

Mount Si High School leaders were hoping the national Day of Silence on Friday in support of gay and lesbian students would pass quietly under the radar.

That's not going to happen.

A prominent anti-gay-rights activist last week called for 1,000 "prayer warriors" to protest in front of the school Friday morning.

A coalition of groups that support gay students quickly announced a counterprotest at another location in Snoqualmie, where Mount Si High is located, to support students participating in the event.

A local church took out a full-page ad in Wednesday's Snoqualmie Valley Record in support of the school's Gay Straight Alliance (GSA), which is sponsoring the Day of Silence. The ad was meant to counter one by the Rev. Ken Hutcherson, pastor of Antioch Bible Church in Redmond, inviting residents to join his protest and declaring: "It's time for moral people to be unashamed and take a stand."

Snoqualmie's police force has asked neighboring jurisdictions to have officers standing by, although Hutcherson has vowed that his protest will be peaceful.

Seattle: Did GLBT art trigger vandalism?

Benham Gallery's windows smashed, smeared with feces during display of Trans photographs.

Two acts of vandalism hit the downtown Benham Gallery over the Easter weekend during its Erotic Beauty exhibition, timed to coincide with the Seattle Erotic Arts Festival. Gallery owner Marita Holdaway believes the acts - a midday smearing with feces and a late-night broken window - were a violent reaction to the subject matter of the exhibit, which included photographs of Transgender people.

Seattle: Community Safety Forum Nov. 27th at 6:00pm

A coalition of community organizations and businesses will hold a forum on safety to address growing concerns in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The forum will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 6:30 p.m. at the Broadway Performance Hall, doors open at 6:00 p.m. This special, public forum is being called in response to recent news reports about incidents of gay-bashing and malicious harassment on Capitol Hill. “We want to provide a forum for the Capitol Hill and LGBT communities to address safety concerns in our neighborhood.” said Seattle LGBT Community Center Interim Executive Director Dennis Poplin. City Councilmember Sally Clark will moderate a panel including Councilmember Nick Licata, Seattle Police Captain Paul McDonagh, Mike Hogan from the King County Prosecutors Office and other safety experts. “Our intention is to provide a panel of educated, invested community leaders to speak specifically about hate crimes, and then open the forum to public dialogue,” Greater Seattle Business Association Executive Director Louise Chernin said. “We would like this forum to be a first step in creating an on-going taskforce to address safety in our community.” The upcoming Capitol Hill community forum on safety is sponsored by the following organizations and businesses: Bailey Coy Books, Broadway BIA, Broadway Video, Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce, Equal Rights Washington, Gay City Health Project, Greater Seattle Business Association, Kaladi Brothers Coffee, Seattle Commission for Sexual Minorities, Seattle Gay News, Seattle LGBT Community Center, Seattle Office for Civil Rights and Rosebud Restaurant. SEATTLE: Thanksgiving Potluck November 21

On Wednesday, November 21 at 6pm the Seattle LGBT Community Center along with the Ingersoll Gender Center will be hosting a Thanksgiving Potluck. Often times the holiday season can be tough for LGBT people who may feel uncomfortable or unwelcome at family functions. They may not be out to family members or have a family who is not supportive of them. This event will allow community members to come together with the support and understanding of other LGBTQ people and have a wonderful holiday meal.

In addition to the potluck, a raffle will be held in which items and gift certificates from local businesses will be awarded to the winners. The funds raised will be used to support the Center’s programs such as QArts, The Faygele benMiriam Lending Library, and the Resource and Referral line, as well as future fundraising events.
Bring a dish to share, bring a friend if you'd like, and let's kick off this holiday season in style!
