I e-mailed Rite Aid about the note and received the following response:

Robbie,

Let me assure you that were taking this matter very seriously. These signs
absolutely do not represent the view of Rite Aid nor the associate
identified. One of our core values is to be a place where all customers and
associates are treated with respect and dignity, where they feel appreciated
and welcome.

We are conducting an investigation regarding this matter as our findings
show that these signs were not posted by any current Rite Aid associates as
indicated. As soon as the signs were noticed, they were immediately removed.
We've notified the local authorities on this act of vandalism and are
offering our full support and cooperation so that the individuals
responsible for this act of intolerance can be prosecuted to the fullest
extent of the law.

I am writing over a concern I have about something I read on the Internet
regarding homophobia, heterosexism, discrimination, and prejudice exhibited
from a New York City Rite Aid store (#04261) possibly under the management
of a Mr. Tom Marquez.

According to various websites, a typed note was taped outside the entrance
of the store by Mr. Marquez stating that "This store does not believe in Gay
and Lesbian marriages" among other things.

Is it true that Mr. Marquez is an employee of that store and Rite Aid? Does
Rite Aid condone such statements? Was the note later removed? I have heard
rumors that there is no such employee by that name, that this is not Rite
Aid's stance, and that the note was immediately removed by actual Rite Aid
employees. I would appreciate some clarification on the matter. Thank you.

It appears to be a case of a disgruntled employee. That doesn't explain though why employees reportedly lied to other people who called to complain or were seeking clarification.
