This past weekend I returned to the wild and wonderful state of West Virginia to represent the Human Rights Campaign at West Virginiaâs 14th annual Pride Festival and Parade in Charleston. It was truly wonderful to return to the state and see so many of the folks I worked with on the Donât Ask, Donât Tell Campaign.
It was great to head up to the Jersey Shore this past weekend with my youngest son to be on-hand for Asbury Park Pride. The 5,000+ attendees were there to protest, party, advocate, demonstrate or represent. The crowd was diverse in every way, but the message was clear: New Jersey is a place where the GLBT community is large, growing, and living life more openly.
Last year, the Delaware legislature passed a non discrimination bill prohibiting discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation in employment. Governor Markell stepped up to protect state employees from discrimination on the basis of gender identity as well as sexual orientation. These actions guaranteed state employees could not be excluded from health coverage, but did not protect the families of LGBT employees nor did it address access to pensions for their families.
