Frank Kameny in the 2009 Capital Pride Parade Fifty-two years after being fired from the federal government for being gay, Frank Kameny has now being honored by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for his accomplishments as a gay-rights pioneer.
''I would not have been able to accomplish what I have in my career without all of Frank's work,'' said OPM Director John Berry, the highest-ranking openly gay appointee in the Obama administration, at the June 24 ceremony. Berry's agency is the successor to the U.S. Civil Service Commission, the agency whose policy against gays in the federal government resulted in Kameny's termination.

A gay sailor whose death is being called a hate crime by his family is being buried in Houston on Friday.
Seaman August Provost III was found shot multiple times on June 30 as he stood guard at Camp Pendleton north of San Diego. Investigators are calling his death a random act unrelated to the 29-year-old's sexuality.

The group that filed a federal Proposition 8 lawsuit is pushing back against LGBT organizations seeking to intervene in the case — much to the consternation of officials who say they're bringing needed voices and expertise to the table.
Lambda Legal, the National Center for Lesbian Rights and American Civil Liberties Union, earlier this week sought to intervene in the American Foundation for Equal Rights suit against Prop 8.

A group of AIDS activists was arrested Thursday for unlawfully demonstrating in the Capitol rotunda, a Capitol Police spokeswoman said.
Sgt. Kimberly Schneider said 11 men and 15 women each face a charge of unlawful assembly, disorderly conduct and loud and boisterous behavior. Their names and ages were not immediately released.
Schneider said the group entered the rotunda, located beneath the Capitol dome, and linked themselves together with a white chain at about 10 a.m. The area is usually crowded with tourists, but police restricted the traffic while they made arrests.
