Gay rights activists this week kicked off a national tour to build public support for repealing “Don't Ask, Don't Tell,” as a new lawmaker officially took the lead in sponsoring legislation that would end the ban on service by openly LGBT people in the U.S. military.

Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Pa.), a second-term congressman and Iraq war veteran, this week took the lead on the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, H.R. 1283, now that its former sponsor, Ellen Tauscher, has left Congress for a position in the State Department.

Sirdeaner Walker, the mother of 11-year-old Carl Walker-Hoover, who committed suicide in April after enduring persistent anti-gay bullying at school, testified today in front of the House Subcommittees on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education and Healthy Familes and Communities in support of the Safe Schools Improvement Act, according to a press release from the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network.

The Safe Schools Improvement Act is federal legislation that would require that schools adopt comprehensive anti-bullying policies.
