A transgender woman who was shot in the face in South Memphis on the morning of December 23 remains in critical condition, according to local media reports.

Leeneshia Edwards worked as a prostitute. This shooting rounds out a year of anti-transgender violence that has plagued the city.

Ebony Whitaker was murdered on July 1, Dre-Ona Blake was murdered on July 28, and Duanna Johnson, who had been beaten by Memphis Police Department officers in February, was killed November 9.

Fla. conservatives fight transgender restroom rule

A blond girl heads from a playground into a women's restroom. A scruffy man, lurking outside, darts in behind her. "Your City Commission Made This Legal," the words on the TV screen read. And it's true, sort of.

The dark ad came from opponents of a gender identity provision added last year to the city's anti-discrimination ordinance, which now allows the city's roughly 100 transgender residents to use whichever restroom they're most comfortable using.

Foes want to repeal the new protection with a March 24 ballot measure that has divided Gainesville, a generally gay-friendly university city surrounded by staunchly conservative north Florida.

President-elect Barack Obama is expected to name gay businessman Fred P. Hochberg as chair of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, an institution that plays a key role in promoting the export of U.S. goods and services.

Hochberg served as deputy administrator and later administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration from 1998 to 2000 in the Clinton administration. In recent months, he has served on Obama’s White House transition team.

“This is very good news,” said Chuck Wolfe, president and CEO of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, an advocacy group that is helping the Obama transition team identify qualified gay appointees.
