Gay News Magazine Headlines (T24T-2)

Feature Story: This year, 2008, marks two bittersweet 20-year anniversaries: World AIDS Day, first observed Dec. 1, 1988, and Us Helping Us, People Into Living Inc., incorporated the same year. A local nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing and treating HIV/AIDS among black gay men, UHU just marked its anniversary with a gala on Nov. 21, while the world prepares for World AIDS Day ceremonies with sadness and hope. Treatments have improved, but infection rates remain alarming. And, yes, people still die of AIDS-related illnesses. If anyone embodies the emotions that infuse discussions of HIV and AIDS, it's Ron Simmons, who has headed UHU since 1992 -- almost as long as he's lived the reality of being HIV-infected himself. Mostly, he laughs. Not for levity's sake, but because his humanity is seemingly unconquerable. He's certainly not afraid to follow laughter with tears. ...more
Gauge: The D.C. Eagle, downtown at 639 New York Ave. NW, may call the nation's capital home, but not so for the brand-spanking-new Mr. D.C. Eagle 2009, John Harris, who hails from Baltimore. Harris secured his new title Saturday, Nov. 22, as the Mr. D.C. Eagle contest rounded out the weekend marking the leather/Levi gay bar's 37th anniversary. The contest was preceded Friday night by another annual tradition, the Eagle Wings Benefit Auction. Mr. DC Eagle ''Eagle Wings is a charity auction for small, local charities,'' says Peter Lloyd, the effort's volunteer organizer. ''This year's auctions featured leather clothes, toys and brunches.'' ...more
Gauge: There were barely enough chairs to go around Sunday, Nov. 23, as about 25 people -- possibly a capacity crowd for the D.C. Jewish Community Center library at 16th and Q Streets NW -- gathered around a large conference table to learn more about the ''village'' concept, and how it might help GLBT residents live independently in the metro area as they age. ''How can we stay in our houses if we're retired?'' asked Alan Dinsmore, who heads the Elder Think Tank, a program of The Center, metro Washington's GLBT community center, sponsor of the Sunday afternoon talk along with DCJCC's Gay and Lesbian Outreach and Engagement project. Eschewing American traditional -- get married, have kids, retire, move to Florida -- attendees were more concerned about how a ''village'' could help them age in the gay-friendly neighborhoods where they were comfortable, rather than face the possibility of going back into the closet in an assisted-living situation, for example. ...more
STUDY: HIV could be eliminated in a decade
Mathematical model shows benefits of testing and treatment
LONDON (AP) | Nov. 26 at 2:12 PM Nov. 26 at 2:12 PM
The virus that causes AIDS could theoretically be eliminated in a decade if all people living in countries with high infection rates are regularly tested and treated, according to a new mathematical model.

It is an intriguing solution to end the AIDS epidemic. But it is based on assumptions rather than data, and is riddled with logistical problems. The research was published online Tuesday in the medical journal, The Lancet.

"It's quite a startling result," said Charlie Gilks, an AIDS treatment expert at the World Health Organization and one of the paper's authors. "In a relatively short amount of time, we could potentially knock the epidemic on ...

'Milk' features superb acting, incomplete story
By RYAN LEE, Southern Voice | Nov. 26 at 9:45 AM Nov. 26 at 9:45 AM
During the last decade of his life, Harvey Milk had an almost pathological urge to rescue gay people. Whether closeted school teachers or young street trade, particularly the latter, Milk was obsessed with finding gay people who felt trapped in the darkest corners of their beings, and showing them that happiness and freedom were alternative options to how they were living.

Three decades after Milk was executed at point-blank range by a political rival in San Francisco’s City Hall, his mission is revived in Gus Van Sant’s new biopic, “Milk,” which opened Wednesday in Washington.

Gay defendants blast officials in Wone case
Police, prosecutors said to be spreading 'speculation'
By LOU CHIBBARO JR, Washington Blade | Nov. 25 at 6:53 PM Nov. 25 at 6:53 PM
Attorneys representing one of three gay men charged with obstruction of justice in the murder of Washington attorney Robert Wone are denouncing police and prosecutors for allegedly spreading “speculation, innuendo, assumptions, and irrelevant inflammatory comments” linking the men to the murder.

The comments came in a motion the attorneys filed Tuesday to request the release of defendant Dylan Ward on his own recognizance. It came the same day that Katherine Wone, Robert Wone’s widow, filed a $20 million wrongful death suit against Ward and co-defendants Joseph Price and Victor Zaborsky.

Ward’s attorneys filed the motion before D.C. Superior Court Judge Fr ...

A web site developed by a San Francisco man, www.stop8.org, has been revamped to be “a hub of information about the fight for equality.” “There’s been a huge groundswell of support since the election, and now’s a crucial time to show our friends and families how they can help,” Matt Baume, the man behind the Web [...]
MSNBC's Keith Olbermann Candace Gingrich, the lesbian sister of conservative stalwart Newt Gingrich, Tuesday night on Countdown With Keith Olbermann. Olbermann discussed a from Survey USA indicating that 8% of California voters who had voted to ban same-sex marriage had changed their mind on the measure following nationwide protests that ensued. Afterward, Gingrich took her brother to task for his recent homophobic rant.
Gay rights advocates in New York thought same-sex marriage was a done deal after the Democrats captured a majority in the state legislature November 4, with Gov. David Paterson already having said he would sign gay marriage legislation if it landed on his desk. But that may be wishful thinking.
As four fundamentalist protesters gathered outside of Silverton, Ore.'s City Hall Monday to protest its transgender mayor, residents of the city came out to counterdemonstrate in support of their mayor, Stu Rasmussen.
Gangsters came out for the 2008 Artrageous, a fund raiser for Nashville Cares. Glitz and Glam was the theme and many of the people attending executed that theme perfectly.

By MATT SCHAFER | Nov. 26 at 1:59 PM Nov. 26 at 1:59 PM
One of the organizers of the Nov. 15 gay rights rally at the Georgia Capitol has announced a new protest set for Dec. 13.

In an email, Jeff Schade calls on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Atlantans and their allies to gather from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. that Saturday outside of Lenox Mall and Phipps Plaza, two of the city's top destinations for holiday shopping.

"During the largest shopping season of the year, we ask that you do one very important thing: Don't Buy Anything! What would happen to this world if the LGBTQ community didn't exist? Why is it that we continue to contri ...

Read it all at “Donny Osmond On Gay Marriage.” Concludes Joe: Donny Osmond “loves” his gay friends, even though he believes they are immoral whore-sluts bringing “calamities foretold by ancient and modern prophets” upon the nation. How does that work, exactly? For what it’s worth, there’s no evidence that Osmond donated to Yes On 8, nor [...]
