Calling for an end to AIDS, an estimated 600 people rallied outside the White House on Thursday and encouraged President-elect Barack Obama to make combating the crisis an early priority.
The rally, coordinated by 11 organizations, included people from Washington, New York and Philadelphia who were hopeful that Obama would act within the first 100 days of his administration to bring relief to people living with HIV or AIDS.
“With Obama, because he comes from Chicago, I’m sure he has a grasp on HIV and AIDS stuff,” said Jose DeMarco, who helped organize the rally. “I think he’s from the South Side of Chicago, so he’s really, really f ...

In some of his strongest criticism to the idea yet, the Republican governor says he'd rather lawmakers not take up the issue this year, instead focusing on the economy.
Douglas says he believes Vermont's law allowing same-sex couples to enter civil unions is sufficient to provide equal rights to gay and lesbian Vermonters.

The chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court said Thursday that a court-sponsored summit on strengthening marriage intentionally did not shy away from discussing gay marriage.
"If I was [a politician pushing an agenda], there would have been no fair debate over gay marriage last night," Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears said the morning after the conference featured a two-hour “discussion” on the issue.
"I would be so scared I would just do it all on [heterosexual] marriage, and I would be slinking around; I chose not to do that,” she said. “I like intelligent discussion; we could use more intelligent discourse; we could use more study.& ...
