History was made in 2006 when Arizona became the first and only state to defeat an anti-gay marriage amendment.
Arizona Together is the group that worked to defeat the proposition that had been put on the ballot by a voter initiative. Then the proposition was written to take benefits away from unmarried straight couples as well as written into the constitution that marriage can only be between one man and one woman. In 2008, Arizona fights a tougher battle. This time Prop. 102 is strictly going after gay marriage. The proposition is only trying to put that marriage is between one man and one woman on the ballot. The other difference is this proposition was put on the ballot by the legislators. This saved the proponents of the measure hundreds of thousands of dollars to not pay people to get signatures and get the measure on the ballot by voter initiative. As of October 3rd the backers of the proposition have raised over $6.9 million - 17 times what Arizona Together has raised to fight the proposition.
A 17 year old boy who threw himself off the roof of a shopping centre in Derby last week as some of the crowd gathered to watch goaded him to jump was gay.
The prominent, sometimes controversial, labor union Unite Here has contributed $100,000 to support gay marriage in California. The union also pledged to raise another $50,000 for marriage equality. The half-million strong union, formed in 2004 from the merger of Unite and Here, said Monday that it was committed to the principal of marriage equality for gay couples in California. More of this story.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Appearing at a lecture at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte on Tuesday, former Human Rights Campaign (HRC) executive director and former Sen. Hillary Clinton supporter Elizabeth Birch praised the leadership abilities of Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) and blasted the Republican presidential ticket. "Obama is a gifted man," Birch told a crowd of approximately 200 people. "He is wise, intelligent and gifted." In a sit-down interview with Q-Notes prior to her speech, Birch said Obama's upbringing in Hawaii has prepared him to be a leader who knows how to relate to a global and diverse community.
It was a coming out party of sorts for Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos. He appeared at his first LGBT function this week, a fundraiser at a private East Village residence organized by the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay GOP group. Just last month, the Senate Republican Majority surprised Albany by introducing the Safe Schools for All Act, an anti-bullying bill that includes transgender protections (a Democratic version passed the Assembly the past seven years). "When we come back in January, we are going to come to agreement with the Assembly on anti-bullying legislation," Skelos told Log Cabin. "We're going to get results."
