"I'm not one who says a candidate shouldn't wear fine clothes," he added. "I'd just like to think they were successful enough in the private sector to have afforded their wardrobe with their own money, not the party's or the campaign's, which is really our money as contributors." Palin has proven to be a major draw at campaign rallies, and her strong performances and appearance provides a polished and professional image on television, one donor noted.
In addition, he suggested, the bad press only means the GOP base will unite even further behind the McCain-Palin ticket. First, a new statewide survey released by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) with funding from The James Irvine Foundation (PDF) has found that Prop 8 is now losing among likely voters, 52 percent to 44 percent. Opposition is 4 points lower among Democrats (67% today, 71% September), but 5 points higher among independents (58% today, 53% September). At least half of men, women, Latinos, and whites oppose Proposition 8. Regionally, majorities of likely voters in the San Francisco Bay Area (67%) and Los Angeles (55%) are opposed. But majorities in the Central Valley (54%) and in the "Other Southern California" region that includes Orange, San Diego, Riverside, and San Bernardino Counties (52%) favor the measure.
On the more general question of how they feel about allowing gay and lesbian couples to legally marry in California, likely voters are divided, 47 percent in favor and 49 percent opposed. These attitudes are largely unchanged since 2005. In an indication of how strong voters' motivations are to cast their ballots on this measure, supporters of Proposition 8 are far more likely (69%) than opponents (49%) to say the results are very important. Your generosity since Monday has been overwhelming! 8 Against 8, an effort by eight lesbian bloggers to raise $8,000 in 8 days for the No On 8 campaign reached its goal in three days - at 11:45 PM ET on Wednesday, we went over the top with $8015 in donations! The eight bloggers intend to continue raising money for No on Prop 8 through the "8 Against 8" campaign, expressing the urgency of fighting Proposition 8. "We're going to keep '8 Against 8' going for the full eight days," said Grace Chu of http://www.gracethespot.com and http://www.afterellen.com. "Equality California's No on Prop 8 campaign needs every cent they can get to defeat this atrocious ballot initiative," she continued. "We cannot afford to lose our momentum in this crucial time leading up to the election.
The 8 Against 8 fundraising effort continues through October 27th. Donations can be made at the following URL: http://www.8against8.com. 100% of all donations made through "8 Against 8" goes directly to Equality California's No on Prop 8 campaign. Our first donor via PHB has claimed an ad for the effort - reader Chino Blanco's statement of support will run on the Blend:
If you wish to donate your free ad space to an organization fighting for LGBT equality, please let us -- and your target organization -- know. The NRCC has focused on the 4th in recent weeks by dumping more than $700,000 into the race including an additional $400,000 in TV airtime to be used in the final week of the campaign - money the NRCC pulled out today by sending letters to Denver TV stations canceling the ad buy. Both parties have viewed the 4th CD as a clear toss-up throughout the election cycle. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has poured more than $600,000 into the race - including an additional $300,000 Tuesday night for more airtime - and independent expenditures totaling nearly $2 million have flooded in mostly for use attacking Musgrave.
...Polling so far hasn't been good for Musgrave this year. A Roll Call poll by SurveyUSA in August put Markey ahead by 7 percentage points and a more recent poll by EMILY's List, a Markey supporter, put Markey up by 9 points. The EMILY's List poll is somewhat skewed being it included a smaller percentage of registered Republicans than the 4th's voter demographics. In addition, Markey's campaign also released internal polling in June that showed her up over Musgrave by 4 percentage points. Musgrave's campaign has not released any polling in recent months and no outside groups gauging the race have shown Musgrave in the lead. "Obviously the role of the Vice President is to support the President, but also to preside when necessary over the U.S. Senate," Pfotenhauer said.
"No, that's not the role of the Vice President," Matthews countered. "You've got it wrong. I gave you a shot, Nancy. I want you to try again. What is the constitutional role of the Vice President in the Constitution?"
"I'm not a constitutional scholar," Pfotenhauer said, "but I've been reading the commentary on this, and it seems to me that people are parsing words, and [Palin] was obviously trying to explain to a young child what the Vice President would do."
The sole constitutional purpose of the Vice President, Matthews explains, is to replace the President under tragic circumstances or cast a tie-breaking vote in the Senate. "It has nothing to do with policymaking, nothing to do with Senate leadership on either side of the aisle," he said. "There is no policy role there whatever for the Vice President...The Vice President has a formal role only. [Palin] believes, somehow, that the Vice President of the United States has some kind of commanding policy development role and can lead the U.S. Senate. Where'd she get this from?" "In your private conversations with Senator McCain is it your impression that he also strongly supports those views? I know that he did not oppose that platform when it was written. Do you think he will implement it?"
Good question. A lot of social conservatives worry about this.
Governor Palin responded: "I do, from the bottom of my heart. I am such a strong believer that McCain believes in those strong planks and we do have good conversations about some of the details too, about the different planks and what they represent."
The 2008 GOP platform is a bit more conservative than it was in 2004. If McCain is going to implement it - something of which Palin is convinced from the bottom of her heart - then that means that McCain will support a constitutional amendment to ban all abortion (including those cases where the mother was raped or was the victim of incest), a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, and he will oppose government-sponsored embryonic stem cell research. In the days following her appearance on Hardball, however, Bachmann has watched as her challenger, El Tinklenberg raised more than a million dollars off her incendiary remarks. That surge in fundraising put Bachmann's re-election in a far less certain position. First the Dole campaign released a ridiculous mailer:
Blogger Robert Eldredge: Kay Hagan's friends actively support political candidates who who support their liberal agenda to remove 'under God' from the Pledge of Allegiance, remove any reference to God in the public arena and eliminating the Christmas Holiday. But what this ad does show is that the Republican party is the party of theocracy, and proud of it. The worst innuendo they could come up with is a GAMPAC spokesman's statement that atheists have no real representation in Congress, but "we fully intend to change that"; and my claim that Kay Hagan deserves praise for being willing to meet with atheists and consider our concerns. In their eyes, these are crimes, and atheists should be condemned and reviled merely for seeking political representation. Kay Hagan has made no statement to the effect that she'll support any part of the atheist political agenda (I have no illusions about that) - in fact, she's an elder of the Presbyterian church - but that hasn't stopped the Republicans from targeting her in this smear campaign. They want to make it so that politicians are afraid even to listen to us. (We can't even get a thousand people to attend an atheist conference and they think we're organized enough to have an agenda?!)
...And to say that Kay Hagan supports those "agenda" items is definitely misleading.
To say that because she associated loosely with someone who might not share the values of most Americans, she must be stopped? That's what John McCain was doing to Barack Obama with William Ayres. It implies a much closer connection than actually exists.
It's all just a pathetic, last-ditch effort for Dole, who is losing a campaign she thought she would be winning handily. That's what Republicans Against 8 is asking California voters in its latest online ad, "Backwards," released today.
"Backwards" urges voters from across the political spectrum to protect the California Dream for all families by voting No on Proposition 8-"It's unfair. It's unnecessary. It's Backwards. McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee were paying for the calls, according to a "work paper" handed to Cole and her co-workers at the Weston offices of 1.2.1 Direct Response, a company based in Philadelphia.
"I was working at the call center," Cole said. "We got a campaign ad talking about how Obama had been part of terrorist attacks on the Capitol, the Pentagon and a judge's home and had ties with Bill Ayers.
"Last Thursday, I told them I did not want to read it," Cole said. "They said, 'Either you read it or you go home.' Meantime, Ted Zoromski is unemployed, but says his conscience is clear.
"Even though I was being paid to do it, I didn't feel comfortable, he said." Normally I post these without much comment. But I this time I couldn't help it. Because this picture helped me understand why the RNC spent over $150,000 on Sarah Palin's wardrobe. The Republican National Committee has spent more than $150,000 to clothe and accessorize vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin and her family since her surprise pick by John McCain in late August. According to financial disclosure records, the accessorizing began in early September and included bills from Saks Fifth Avenue in St. Louis and New York for a combined $49,425.74. The records also document a couple of big-time shopping trips to Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, including one $75,062.63 spree in early September. The RNC also spent $4,716.49 on hair and makeup through September after reporting no such costs in August. The cash expenditures immediately raised questions among campaign finance experts about their legality under the Federal Election Commission's long-standing advisory opinions on using campaign cash to purchase items for personal use. See, here's my theory. That $150,000 wasn't just spent on "items for personal use." That money was an investment in raising the prospects of picking up or turning on out a certain segment of the youth vote. And that, my friends, is what we call as "stimulus plan." [Pic via The Huffington Post] CNN's John King reports that the McCain campaign is taking a hard look at how it will employ resources in the waning days of the '08 election. McCain, who is battling Obama in a number of states which supported George Bush in 2004 and has already pulled out of Michigan, is considering a pullout from Colorado. If true, this decision makes the Republicans path to 270 electoral votes very difficult. Under the new calculus, placing Colorado in the Obama column, McCain must first carry every remaining swing state, including: Nevada, Missouri, Ohio, North Carolina and Florida. If he accomplishes this, he must still either win Pennsylvania or carry both Virginia and New Mexico. Only by running the board on swings states and flipping Obama leaning Pennsylvania (or New Mexico and Virginia) can McCain win on November 4th. This is a difficult road to travel. Polls show Obama currently has substantial leads in three of the five swing states (Nevada, Ohio and Florida), is tied with McCain in North Carolina and is trailing by one percentage point in Missouri. Furthermore, polls in Pennsylvania have Obama leading 53% to 41%. In Virginia Obama leads 53% to 43%, and in New Mexico polls indicate Obama up 45% to 40%. The Obama campaign, by comparison has a much easier path to victory and a number of different options to pursue in its quest for the White House. First, Obama needs to keep all of the states currently in his column. If he can do this, all Obama needs is to do is win one of the five remaining swing states. The Democrat has a much easier and much clearer path to victory. A McCain victory however is still possible. The maverick from Arizona has certainly been written off in the past, and like Lazarus has returned from the dead. There are also a number of intangible factors which may sway the race, including the Bradley Effect. However, McCain's hopes appear to be dimming with each passing day as the likelihood of an Obama victory appears more likely. The participants were:
* Rev. Eric Lee, President, Southern Christian Leadership Council of LA.
Remarks by the group, passed along by journalist Karen Ocamb, are below the fold. Ron opened with the purpose of the news conference - to let people know that "African Americans will vote No on Prop 8."
Rev. Lee:
"The Southern Christian Leadership Council is the only organization founded by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The entire core of SCLC is about fighting for justice for all people and against discrimination... As a result of that - this issue about marriage equality requires that we speak out against this proposition because anytime any group of people are denied the right afforded to another group of people, it is an issue of the violation of civil rights. And we need to be clear about that.
The difficulty is that you have many who are considered to be clergy, considered to be Christian, that are not understanding the rights of people for free choice. And to have the same benefit that any other people are afforded. The disappointment is that there is an attempt for people to impose a narrow theological view on relationships upon every body in every situation. And no one has the right to do that.
So because of that, I, along with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference - I also spoke with Rev. Lawson who is one of the foremost theorists and teachers of non-violent opposition to injustice - who adamantly said this is the right thing for us to do. So we stand on your side, we will stand with you until justice is rendered until you are ensured that your rights will never be denied by any group of people for any discriminatory reason. So God bless you and I'm with you."
Rev. Cribbs:
"..... If I simply based my decision on television commercials, I would be for Proposition 8. But those commercials lie. The information that's being presented on television, even from a law professor at Pepperdine University, are all based on lies, not facts.
First of all, this is not about children and protecting children. The language in Proposition 8 that is put on the ballot has to do with marriage between a man and a woman. I'm opposed to Proposition 8 because to put discriminatory language in the California constitution....(garbled on my tape, sorry)...Although we have discriminated against persons because they're Chinese, Japanese, Latinos, we have not put discriminatory language in the state constitution. And in the 21st century, it is not a move forward to begin putting discriminatory language in the state constitution. So I oppose Proposition 8 on that.
I personally oppose Proposition 8 because I know what it feels like to have someone else tell me who I should be married to. I know the pain of that. I know the suffering that comes with that. I do not believe it is right for a third party detached and not involved dictating who should love whom and how that relationship should be formed. I oppose Proposition 8 on its face.
And then, finally - theologically. My faith tells me to treat people the way I want to be treated. To do no harm to anyone. I have heard people say, 'I am hurt by the language of discrimination that is being proposed for the California state constitution.' If don't want to feel the pain, then I am obligated not to impose pain on someone else. And so I oppose Proposition 8.
The United Church of Christ opposes Proposition 8 ....there is no reason for any one to support Proposition 8 if they have a concern for others and if they do not want someone to dictate their relationship - that it is inappropriate to legislative the dictation on someone else."
Rev. Mackenzie (who's from South Africa):
"I moved to this country eight years ago and I am horrified that now they want to put into the constitution that it is right to discriminate....We are all human, created in the image of God and all of us, in our own unique ways, reflect that image. And if we say yes to Proposition 8, we are distorting and destroying the image of God in our gay brothers and sisters."
Willie Pelote:
"....Let's be clear. What Prop 8 is designed to do is to take away the rights that gays and lesbian have worked for over the years and should be guaranteed under the constitution, not denied...
[It's important to] get word out on how people should vote on Prop 8 - it s no on Prop 8 . it's discriminatory. Its un-American, it's unpatriotic. It's against the will of the people in the great state of California. And let's think of the Mormon Church - and if God was given the right to protect everyone of his children and if you're against that, you're against god and we're against you....
Prop 8 is bad for California...Prop 8 is about outsourcing people's rights and discriminating against them in everyday life. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees - the largest public union in this country - and 175,000 strong in the state of California - will stand with you until justice prevails. We will never, ever give up and allow someone to put in the constitution discriminatory langue against anyone in our society."
Doug Spearman:
"....We can now get married in the state of California. But we have to be vigilant and protect that right. And be constantly awake and aware and fight for something the state constitution is built to protect. They want to dismantle that in order to take away something from us.
When the Supreme Court authored its opinion, it effectively wiped away not just discrimination against gays and lesbians. They wiped away discrimination in the state of California in a way that it had ever been addressed before. They did a brave and beautiful thing, making our lives safe making our lives accountable, our lives worthy, making our lives important in this state. We held up a light in California that shines on the entire nation. We held up a light that is a beacon for truth and honor and dignity and respect so that every other state has a responsibility to turn towards or turn away from.... This isn't just the right to marry....this is a civil right. It is the beginning. So if they're going to take away this right, what right other rights are they going to take away?,,,, "
Asked about the concern that African Americans who show up to vote for Barack Obama, especially young people who haven't voted before, will vote Yes on Prop 8 - the participants all said that the youth must be told that "Barack Obama would vote No on Proposition 8 - so you should, too." Also, read Karen's coverage of another No On 8 event at the home of bilionaire Ron Burkle over at The Bilerico Project, Imagine "Dynasty" 2008 - only Democratic, dressed down and Tudor-style. From the Colorado Springs Gazette: One of Sarah Palin’s most prominent local supporters, Focus on the Family founder James Dobson, didn’t go to her rally Monday at Sky Sox stadium, but he did manage to sneak in a phone interview with her after the event. The 18-minute interview will air Wednesday on Dobson’s “Focus on the Family” radio show. Tom Minnery, senior vice president of government and public policy of Focus on the Family Action, the lobbying arm of Focus, wouldn’t divulge the details of the interview. But he said Dobson spoke with Palin about the pressure of the campaign and the attacks on her since Sen. John McCain chose her in August as his running mate. “She is smart, articulate and has a Christian testimony, so we can see why the national media is out to get her,” Minnery said Monday. Gee Tom, if by 'Christian testimony' you mean 'rabidly racist, neo-McCarthyite groupies who don't care that she's as qualified to be VP as my pugs are,' then I'll have to agree with you. If you're simply playing the christianist victimology card, then please let me show you where you can shove said card. P.S. Does Daddy D's wardrobe come from Neiman's as well? NOTE FROM PAM: Right Wing Watch's Kyle Mantyla put himself through the torture of listening to Daddy D slobber all over Bible Spice so you don't have to. She not only reiterated that she and John McCain are staunch womb control advocates, she in turn slobbered over the fossilized professional "protector of the family." Read after the jump. After posts by me on Pam's House Blend Sunday night and Baratunde Thurston on Jack and Jill Politics last night, we're on day three of the Voter Suppression Wiki's first-ever action alert. The issue of confusing ballot design where North Carolina "straight party" voters need to make sure to vote for a Presidential candidate as well has been getting noticeably more attention: a couple of excellent posts by Chris Kromm on Facing South ( 1 , 2 ) go into more detail on the "1% undervote" estimate and the implications of 40,000 or more votes not counting this election, and the Obama Straight Flip video is helping get the word out to Democrats via YouTube.
Of course, many of the people most at risk for losing their vote don't read political blogs or watch YouTube. And individual experiences in early voting, for example in this thread on NCBlue, vary greatly: some sites have helpful poll workers and "greeters" to remind people, others doen't, and there's plenty of room confusion. So we think there's still plenty of opportunity to help in getting the word out. Baratunde summed it up well:
In my last post, I mentioned that this is a prototypical case of where we see the Voter Suppression Wiki as having value by supplementing other mechanisms of getting the word out, and especially since this is our first action alert, it's a great learning experience. For example, one thing that caught me by surprise is a reaction in several places that this is no big deal at all, for example somebody on OpenLeft who thought it was a better use of their time to downplay the importance of this than to help get the word out. Hmm.*
And more generally this story isn't getting a lot of pickup in the voting rights or progressive blogospheres. For example, it wasn't even in VotersUnite's Daily Voting News 30+ stories either of the last two days, despite the excellent Facing South posts and the local media attention. What's with that? Yeah, I know there are plenty of other stories going on, and this isn't as sexy as hacking the Ohio Secretary of State or the Texas deceptive emails, but still ... we're talking 40,000 or more votes here, and it's a situation where concerted action before the election can make a big difference. I don't have any great ideas here (suggestions welcome) but it certainly seems like an area we should be able to do better at.
More generally this a good chance to look at how we're approaching things. For example the information we want in an action alert is somewhat different than in the incident report, with the focus on what voters and activists can do. So I created a new action alert page on the wiki -- a decent start, and once we refine it we can use it as a template for future action alerts. And as we start issuing more alerts, we'll want to make it easy for people to get them, so we set up the vswiki-alerts Google Group that people can subscribe to if they want email updates.**
Things will get steadily more intense over the next couple of weeks, and so now's a good time to be trying things out ... and looking for ways to improve, hopefully in time to impact our next action alert.*** So please, even if you're in some state other than North Carolina, have a look and imagine the likely alerts wherever you live. If you're an activist, is the information enough so that you can figure out how to help? If you're a blogger or journalist, is there enough there and on the incident page that you could cover the story? If you're a voter, is the result clear? There's a feedback thread at the bottom of the page, so please let us know what works and what doesn't.
And don't forget that there are at least 40,000 votes at risk in North Carolina, so please help get the word out. From the action alert:
* Frankly I think some of the dynamics playing into this a disbelief the people could make this "obvious" a mistake (which flies in the face of past data) and an elitist notion that anybody who is "dumb enough" to make this mistake should have less of a right to vote. This of course has all kinds of discriminatory implications related to age, urban/rural bias, native language, and probably lots of other dimensions as well ... but most people don't think it through that much.
** for those who prefer RSS, we're working on getting a feed in place

The Republican National Committee's $150,000 investment in Sarah Palin's wardrobe has prompted some teeth gnashing among the party's big donors about its political sensibility and a feisty debate among campaign finance specialists about its legality.
It's not illegal, it just looks really bad with the economy in the tank, it's not the PR the ticket needs at this time. Still, the rationalization continues.Other donors, in other e-mails and interviews, said the costs were worth the investment.
Good luck with that. BTW, although the $150K makeover may be legal, it is taxable income, but Bible Spice claims that she will donate her new "gently used" duds to charity rather than cough up any dough.

JOHN MCCAIN: I'm John McCain and I approve this message. The gap between likely voters in favor and opposed to Proposition 8 (44% yes, 52% no) has narrowed since September (41% yes, 55% no) and August (40% yes, 54% no). Compared to last month, more Republicans (70% today, 62% September) would vote yes on the measure, which would eliminate the right for same-sex couples to marry that the state Supreme Court granted in May.
Those close numbers mean we have to forge ahead in these last few days and that leads to the second bit of great news...
"I am still in shock at how quickly and effectively the community responded to the 8 Against 8 campaign," said Renee Gannon of http://www.lesbiatopia.com. "The money donated and the excitement generated in three short days have far surpassed what I ever could have imagined that we would accomplish in eight days, never mind three."
More info below the fold.

Are we going to see another classic anti-gay Bush hag bite the dust on Nov. 4? It must be on the minds of the National Republican Congressional Committee, which has yanked its ad buy in the Colorado Congressional District in support of Marilyn Musgrave, author of the FMA. Go Betsy Markey! (Colorado Independent): In a surprise move, National Republican Congressional Committee canceled its TV advertising buy in the 4th Congressional District for the last week of the election on Wednesday in what some experts say is clear sign Republican incumbent Rep. Marilyn Musgrave's re-election bid for a fourth term is at risk. It could also mean that Musgrave's challenger Betsy Markey could become the first Democrat elected to the 4th CD in decades.
Palin: A Vice President has a really great job because not only are they there to support the President's agenda, they are like the team member, the teammate to the president. They are in charge of the United States Senate. If they want to, they can really get in there with the senators and make a lot of good policy changes that make life better.
Pfotenhauer just went on Hardball opposite Obama spokesman Bill Burton, and the latter might as well have just kicked back, put his feet up and watch Pfotenhauer self-immolate under Chris Matthews basic civics lesson. Matthews played the unreal Palin clip twice, and then handed it over to Nancy, who doused her self-respect and what pitiful rep she has left with gasoline and lit the match. Raw Story:
No, Palin was doing an interview with a reporter who passed along a question from a third grader. BZZZZT. Wrong Answer. You are the weakest link...goodbye. Dr. James Dobson today asked Gov. Sarah Palin about her private conversations with Sen. McCain about the Republican platform's planks on life and marriage.
The strange thing is, McCain does support embryonic stem cell research and has stated that abortion should be left to the states. Will he correct her, or have his long standing postions morphed in this desperate time?
We all knew that Presidential face leech and defender of "family values" Rep. Michele Bachmann's (R-MN) homo-hate would never be her undoing, but it's still delicious to see her going down in flames because of Michele Bachmann's unhinged neo-McCarthy rant on Hardball. Two sources aware of ad buys in Minnesota say that the National Republican Congressional Committee is pulling its media purchases from Bachmann's race. If true, it is a remarkable fall for a congresswoman who, until recently, seemed relatively safe in her predominantly conservative district. The race had become closer in recent days -- the NRCC had transferred funds from Rep. Erik Paulsen (MN-03) to Bachmann a little over a week ago.

Atheists are people that North Carolinian's would not want to have over for dinner? They don't share North Carolina's values? Atheists are the most vile, radical liberals in America? The most vile? Really? The most VILE? That is complete insanity.
When that mailer didn't work -- Hagan's poll numbers kept going up -- the NRSC decided to try this ad, "Godless: Kay Hagan and the Godless Americans PAC":
More below the fold.
Liberal Kay Hagan flew to Boston to pocket campaign cash from leaders of the Godless Americans PAC. What is Godless Americans PAC? Godless Americans Political Action Committee is a left-wing organization based in Washington, DC -- dedicated to 'Mobilizing America's nonbelievers for political activism.'
By the way, Dole's still losing ground. Too bad, so sad. (Daylight Atheism) I continue to be disappointed by the lackluster quality of these smear ads. The melodramatic piano music in the background is way over the top. Also, the NRSC doesn't appear to have a copyeditor who knows how to spell "atheism". And when it comes to the scary, scary goals of the atheist movement, they can only think of three: removing "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance, removing "In God We Trust" from the currency, and no longer designating Christmas an official federal holiday. Really? That's the worst they could come up with? Anti-atheist bigotry is usually much more inventive than this. No claims that atheists want to ban prayer from all public schools, or outlaw parents' teaching their children about God? No wild-eyed assertions about how the Evil Atheist Conspiracy will send jackbooted thugs to break down little old ladies' doors and take away their Bibles? Frankly, I could make a better attack ad against me.
Hemant Mehta at Friendly Atheist:While many atheists would like to see "Under God" removed from the Pledge of Allegiance and "In God We Trust" removed from our money - The Pledge and paper money were both God-free before the 1950s Communist scare - it's not the highest priority on our "agenda" - we don't have one of those.
Would you run backwards? Would you bike backwards? Then why take California backwards?
Chaylee Cole, a student at Fairmont State University, lost her part-time job in Weston last Friday after refusing to make telephone calls attacking Barack Obama.
What was she told to read?"Hello. I'm calling for John McCain and the RNC because you need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home and killed Americans. And Democrats will enact an extreme leftist agenda if they take control of Washington. Barack Obama and his Democratic allies lack the judgment to lead our country. This call was paid for by McCain-Palin 2008 and the Republican National Committee at 202-863-8500."
And another RNC call center staffer, this time in in Wisconsin, Ted Zoromski of Middleton, was handed the same script and quit over the vile, nonsensical propaganda."This is not really different from any of the other messages we've had out there," said Marc Jefferson, of the Wisconsin GOP. "We've seen Barack Obama attack John McCain over his staff people and who they've been associated with."

Palin then thanked Dobson for all he has done for the movement, declaring that "if it were not for you, so many of us would be missing the boat in terms of hearing the message in understanding what we can do to further the cause of life."
Kyle also did a rough transcription of the interview, and the drooling continued -- with a call for prayers for an election miracle from God, and how Daddy D will roll out the red carpet for the witch hunter-anointed Palin when she comes to Colorado Springs to Focus HQ. She can't wait.
Dobson went on to praise the Republican Party platform as the most pro-life, pro-family party platform in history, which Palin seconded, and when Dobson asked her if she thought John McCain would seek to implement it if elected, she said she did "from the bottom of my heart" and reiterated that it was important for Americans to know "that John McCain is solidly there on those solid planks in our platform that build the right agenda for America." Palin: I am not discouraged at all, even hearing those poll numbers because, for some reason, I have found myself over and over again in my life being put in these underdog positions and yet still when victory needed to be reached in order to meet this greater good, it’s always worked out just perfectly fine despite the fact that over and over again I’ve been, and I know John McCain has been, in underdog positions. To me, it motivates us, makes us work that much harder and it also strengthens my faith because I’m going to know at the end of the day, putting this in God’s hands, that the right thing for America will be done, the end of the day on November 4th. So I’m not discouraged at all, I’m just fine with the position that we are in today.
Question: if McCain/Palin go down in flames on Nov. 4, is that God's will?
Dobson: [Talks about prayer call] “We were just asking for, rather boldly asking, for a miracle with regard to the election this year … let me just say that you that, regardless of the outcome of this election, we would love to have you come by and see us here at Focus on the Family sometime. I know that this is an extremely stressful time for you and we’re not asking you to come now, but when the time permits, we’ll roll out the red carpet for you.”
Palin: I don’t even need any kind of red carpet but I would absolutely love to. Dr. Dobson, Todd is sitting right next to me here in this vehicle before we get on an airplane, so Todd and I too, after I speak with you, I’ll share this conversation with him and we’ll be praying too for your ministry and for those pastors whom you have just mentioned also. Collectively, we can do all that we can within us to strengthen our country and to let Americans know that government has to be on their side, it’s their government and as we seek God’s wisdom and His will in this election, we have to have faith that it’s all going to be good at the end of the day there on November 4th as this country moves forward.Executive summary

I would add that you should post this blog item to the walls of your facebook friends who live in North Carolina asking them to spread the word. Email it to family and friends down there. Call them. We cannot let this new voter participation go to waste!
Sure enough, when I posted my last blog to my feed and a couple of friend's walls on Facebook, a couple of different people replied "thanks very much, I'll send the message on." That doesn't sound like a heck of a lot, but if they reach out to their friends and family, and maybe mention it in their office, school, or church, it can have an impact. If you multiply this by the 125 people involved in the Voter Suppression Wiki -- and whoever else reads any of our posts or forwarded email -- it starts to really add up. So please, if you're in North Carolina (or know people who do), help spread the word.
So one takeaway is that we need to be clearer about the potential consequences, both in terms of voting rights (40,000 people losing their votes) and for those who are viewing things primarily through a partisan lens (enough to tip the election).

Tell your friends and family. Share with your friends on Facebook, MySpace, BlackPlanet, and other social networks. Encourage bloggers and local media to cover the story. Discuss it at your workplace and church. If you're with a political campaign, include the information with Get Out the Vote drives. Other suggestions? See the discussion thread!
