SAN FRANCISCO -- The California Supreme Court ruled today that same-sex couples should be permitted to marry, rejecting state marriage laws as discriminatory.
The long-awaited court decision stemmed from San Francisco's highly publicized same-sex weddings, which in 2004 helped spur a conservative backlash in a presidential election year and a national dialogue over gay rights.

Tom, I heard about this on NPR in the car on the way home from work, and I LITERALLY yelled for joy! Two down, forty-eight to go!!
We shall see what happens.
Many seem worried about the right side gathering votes to put it in the California Constitution.
Of course, I'm thinking, didn't Arnold say he would veto that?
But this news was most deffinately good news.
I meant to say "signatures" instead of "votes" in my previous post.
See? Here we go on the "equal" thing again. Is there ANYTHING, ANYWHERE in the constitution about STRAIGHT marriage? NO? Well, then there shouldn't be anything in there about gay marriage, either.
UGH! WHAT are people so f***ing AFRAID OF?!
