The cost of copyright literalism

Twice in as many weeks I’ve had authors of articles contact me.

Both times, the tone of their message prompted me to remove their articles immediately.

As many of you know I’m an editor for the gay news forum on Topix. Therefore, I look for newsworthy articles and announcements online which I form links to by placing part of the article in one of my 4 blogs.

I act as a gay news “funnel of information”. Gathering gay news from an unlimited number of resources online.

In essence I am doing these people a favor by spreading their articles to a much wider audience. I don’t post the entire article and I always have a link to the original article.

Recently I posted a link to a public event announcement and the author contacted me about copyright issues. I was shocked that anyone would object to spreading the news, as wide as possible, about a public event.

I feel sorry for the event holders that someone is more worried about copyright then the number of event attendees.

Evidently some folks are more concerned with copyrights then they are the number of eyes who see what they write.

If folks want to “shoot themselves in the foot”, who am I to argue. I'll happily remove any article without hesitation.

Tom, SERIOUSLY?! What's WRONG with these people? If not for you, I'd certainly not be as in touch with news and events as I am - you know how much I appreciate the work that you do!

I'm astounded that people would be so small-minded but, then again, I find enough small-mindedness in the world that I really shouldn't be surprised anymore.

Keep doing what you're doing - it matters.

Thanks Mrs. Chili.

You bet I'll keep it up.

I am shocked at your interpretation of these events. Though you claim you never take an entire post, I contacted you precisely because that is exactly what you did with my post. You could have easily linked to my blog and then reposted the letter campaign. If you'd done that you wouldn't have violated my copyright and still passed all the necessary public and activist information on. Instead you deleted the letter campaign failing to spread the word to anyone. There are established ways to pass on blog information and none of them involve taking whole posts. Shame on you for trying to cover up your behavior by making me or anyone else out to be the bad guy for protecting our intellectual property. If you don't know how to link information without taking whole posts look around or ask.

I did not post your entire article but if you wish to say so, that's fine.
Since it was a public event I did post a larger part of the article putting in complete information about the event.
I gave you credit and linked to your article.
Your hard lined attitude on copyright is your choice. Sadly, regarding this incident, it affects others also.
I live in the Seattle area and was attempting to help promote the event.
You can rest assured I will never again access your sight or promote your articles.

ps: I've posted 1000's of articles on my four blogs. There has been 2 people complain.
You have every right to do so and I respect that.
But when you look a gift horse in the mouth........
Have a great day.

it was a public event. so continuing to blame for not passing on the information when all you had to do was follow netiquette is your choice.

Just to prove my point:

Here is a link to the original article:

http://profbw.wordpress.com/2008/04/29/may-day-petition/

Here is a link to a "google cache" copy of my article:

http://209.85.173.104/search?q=cache:MFkgW8YQXrwJ:www.2015place.com/2008/04/may-day-petition-march.html+may+day+petition+2015&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us

As you will notice the following paragraphs were NOT included:

2nd
7th
8th
9th
10th
11th
12th

Which is proof that I DID NOT post your entire article.

You are delusional.

Attempts to deceive usually fail.

I did not write those paragraphs. They are part of the petition. You copied my entire text - mine - as in what I wrote. You can call me names and you can blame me but it really boils down to one thing. You took the entire text of what I wrote, tanked the post, blamed me for not passing on info, and then misrepresented the entire thing twice. look up the word delusion and also plagiarism while you are at it.

I fully understood the first two paragraphs were yours. The only two paragraphs in the entire article that were yours.

I used the first paragraph only (see link below).

If you feel like that is using your entire article then so be it.

I removed the article.

Oh, since I forget to reference the links correctly in my last posting here they are again.

My original posting, in a Google Cache

and of course, your article with the new update on it

Have a great day.

One further note, just in case some of the other paragraphs at the end were also yours.

If this is the case, there was no distinction made between the end of the public letter and the start of your writing.
